Birds:  Facts, Identification & Control

Bird-related problems can lead to lost business, contaminated products and expensive damage to building exteriors. Some bird species harbor diseases that can be transmitted to humans and are classified as public health threats. Bird droppings are also problematic, as bird waste can ruin building finishes and create unsanitary conditions. The droppings can also be expensive to clean up. If birds become a problem, contact your pest management professional and ask him or her to develop a bird control program specifically tailored for your home or business.

Some bird species are considered a real nuisance for businesses. Most pest birds gain entry into premises through loading bay areas or damaged roofing. They are known to:

  • Cause property damage by dislodging roof tiles, blocking guttering, building nests and leaving droppings that corrode building material.
  • Be aggressive and attack customers and employees, especially during the breeding season when they are defending their young.
  • Carry fleas, mites, ticks, lice and other biting insects which can spread diseases and pose a serious health risk.

Adopting expert bird control measures sooner rather than later will ensure your business is protected against the hazards associated with pest birds.

At Total Pest Control Service, we’re the experts in effective bird control. We have a wide range of discreet, cost-effective and humane control measures that won’t harm the birds or disrupt your business.

The common birds that cause nuisance are crows & pigeons. They are known carry or transmit such diseases histoplasmosis, pseudo-tuberculosis, salmonella food poisoning & etc. Birds can be a huge problem when they find their way into a building looking for food or simply looking to roost and be sheltered. This can cause an undesirable effect visually and in terms of health. Control of pest birds can vary considerably due to many different factors. We typically center our bird control programs on “exclusion,” or closing up the access points they use to gain entry into a structure. Sometimes bird spikes can be installed to make a ledge a very uncomfortable place to roost.

Bird Control

Habitat modification usually is the best long-term solution to bird control. Reducing food availability and access to protective shelter for roosting and nesting are the fundamental objectives of any bird control program. Bird control efforts begin with a comprehensive inspection by your pest management professional and, based on the inspection findings, he or she will identify the species of bird(s) and choose the most effective exclusion methods.

Some common methods of bird exclusion include installing exclusion devices on surfaces used by birds for roosting and loafing, plus using bird screening to prevent access to bird roosting and nesting sites. Your pest management professional will employ techniques and products that are humane, efficient and effective to the target birds.

Problems with Birds

  • Risk of infection
  • Damage to property
  • Additional insect pests can lead to bites and textiles damage
  • Bird droppings also increase the risk of people slipping and falling.
  • There are several signs of a bird infestation:
  • Bird droppings
  • Nests
  • High levels of insect infestation
  • Associated insect pests such as fleas and flies
  • Bad smells

Prevention

  1. The removal of roosting niches and the sealing of any crevices, large openings, and entrances in high areas aids in effective control.
  2. Available water sources, such as rooftop air conditioners, should be eliminated by screening.
  3. Never leave food or water sources exposed outdoors.
  4. Keep garbage containers closed. Dispose of garbage on a regular basis.
